Overview

COPD is a heterogeneous disease with diverse risk factors, varying symptoms, clinical presentations, and varying course, disease trajectory, and care needs.  There have been many new advances in the past few years in understanding COPD disease pathogenesis, risk factors, disease trajectories, comorbidities, and patient outcomes.  These issues have highlighted the need for a more comprehensive approach to patient assessment to enable proper diagnosis and to guide optimal personalized disease management.  Healthcare professionals must be updated on these evolving novel issues in the field of COPD diagnosis and management to enable the provision of optimal evidence-based care to people afflicted with the disease.

This hybrid one-day CME course is designed to address existing professional practice gaps by expanding healthcare professionals’ knowledge of the state-of-the-art evidence-based care of individuals with COPD.  The enhanced knowledge gained should help to improve competence, and performance in providing care, and by virtue of this, should also help to improve patients’ outcomes.

Target Audience: This program is designed for practicing pulmonologists, pulmonary/critical care/sleep fellows, primary care providers, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other trainees or healthcare professionals (such as respiratory therapists or physiotherapists) interested in and involved with the care of individuals with COPD.

Objectives
  1. Identify the spectrum of known risk factors for COPD and the varying trajectories of COPD
  2. Recognize new concepts in COPD pathogenesis
  3. Describe the varying phenotypes of COPD and their impact on patients’ outcome
  4. Discuss updates in the recommended approaches to diagnosis and comprehensive assessment of the COPD patient
