Caring for the Child with Diabetes in the School Setting

This unique course will focus on the most up-to-date and evidence-based care principles for managing diabetes in the school setting. Topics to be covered will have direct impact on the day-to-day management of youth with diabetes in school such as continuous glucose monitoring and how to remotely monitor data, insulin delivery methods including the most advanced automated insulin delivery systems, treatment of hypoglycemia, management of glucose during increased activity and exercise, and how to approach hyperglycemia and sick days. Additional sessions are devoted to 504 plans and the legal landscape. Finally, we will review staging of type 1 diabetes and the ability to screen for risk of type 1 diabetes. Sessions will be applicable to the care of youth with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Participants will be provided opportunities for hands-on experience with current diabetes technology and glucagon therapies. Experts from the Yale Pediatric Diabetes team will be leading sessions.

1. Comprehend the use of current continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems and remote monitoring
2. Define the concept of automated insulin delivery systems and how they differ from conventional insulin pumps
3. Review the symptoms and treatment of high and low blood sugars as well as the management of increased activity and exercise
4. Discuss the assessment and management of sick days in those with diabetes
5. Provide an overview of 504 plans and legal issues surrounding diabetes management in schools
6. Explain the staging of Type 1 diabetes and screening programs
7. Explore the basics of how nutrition impacts blood sugars
