Additional Information

Program Overview: We are excited to offer you this five-day resilience and well-being course designed specifically for Yale Medicine physicians. This course will be split across two weekends and will equip you with actionable skills to enhance your ability to overcome adversity and challenges, manage stress, and thrive in your professional and personal life. In this highly experiential workshop, you will collaborate with your colleagues, engage in practical exercises, get personalized coaching and feedback from the instructors, and discuss strategies for maintaining the skills after the course concludes.

The Penn Resilience and Well-Being Program is being delivered by the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center. Empirical studies show that this program increases well-being and optimism, and reduces depression and anxiety. More than 500,000 people around the world have benefitted from the Center’s programs, including educators and their students, U.S. Army soldiers, a professional sports organization, corporate audiences, and more.

Program Outline: Following are the core blocks of content that will be covered during the 5-day program. For each block, we will review supporting research, engage in experiential exercises, and discuss the applications of the skills to your life as a Yale Medicine physician.

Introduction/Program Framework: We will first focus on understanding the factors that contribute to physician burnout, and discuss the science of what enables people to bounce back from adversity and thrive, and what increases overall well-being.

Enhancing Cognitive and Emotional Well-being: In this block, we will help you to identify and overcome counterproductive patterns in thinking that undercut well-being. You will learn about the benefits and hallmarks of optimism, including how to accurately identify where you have control. These skills will also help you regulate emotion and energy levels to enable focus and optimal performance, and increase your experiences of positive emotion in everyday life to buffer against stress.

Building Character Strengths: In this block, we will help you identify your top character strengths and the character strengths of those around you. We will delve into how you can leverage your top character strengths to enhance your resilience and well-being and to create a life deep in meaning.

Building Strong Relationships: This block is an exploration of key variables that enable relationships to thrive and the relationship building skills that facilitate the creation of robust support networks.

Program Wrap-up: At the end of the course, we will summarize the content covered during the 5-days and discuss your “next steps” for using resilience and well-being skills in your life as a physician.

Schedule:

Breakfast will be served from 8:00am – 9:00am daily.

The program will run from 9:00am to approximately 4:30pm each day. There will be morning and afternoon breaks, and lunch served daily.
