Overview
Synopsis:
This one-day conference updates gold-standard guidelines to contemporary ophthalmic care and is designed to meet the educational needs of ophthalmologists in the greater New England area. The scientific CME session will be held in the New Haven Lawn Club, followed by a dinner on Friday hosted at Anthony's Ocean View. Saturday will be designated for family fun activities. Additional details for Family Fun Activities will be provided closer to the event weekend.

Scientific Program Overview:
Scientific program provides update about a wide range of eye disorders such as macular and retinal disorders, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, cornea,  ocular inflammatory disorders, pediatric ophthalmology and orbit.

The past two decades have seen significant advances in our ability to treat ocular disease. Therapeutic agents that are efficacious in attenuating disease pathogenesis have been developed but often display poor clinical translation and don't prevent vision loss. Advances have promoted the use of in vitro models, and they are becoming a new methodology for drug discovery that could overcome the species-related limitations of traditional drug discovery.

A burst of innovation has produced new ocular hypotensive drugs and long-acting delivery methods, expanding the clinician's medical armamentarium. However, while pharmacological options are expanding, the traditional role of topical medical therapy is being challenged by selective laser trabeculoplasty, micro-invasive glaucoma surgery, sustained delivery methods, and other independent neuroprotection strategies. Malignant glaucoma is a severe disease with treatment via surgery is still a challenge. The results from clinical trials are providing evidence for other treatment options and experience for optimizing outcomes which can meet the huge clinical need for sustained, less invasive alternatives.

This scientific symposium aims to address the barriers to receiving these services that exist at multiple levels and increase awareness and integration into routine ophthalmic care to deliver comprehensive care. Lastly, as ophthalmic educators harness the power of educational technology, it is critical that their novel educational initiatives are incorporated into competency-based curricula with assessments mapped to the competencies. These advances will be discussed in the final session of the program.

Objectives
  1. Discuss Yale's role in the development of advances in ophthalmology over the past 50 years
  2. Review modern management of ophthalmic diseases
  3. Discuss recent clinical trials
  4. Update about advances in ophthalmology and visual science in 2023
