Overview

Epilepsy and seizures effect almost 3 million Americans of all ages. Tremendous advances have been made in the treatment of epilepsy over the past decade with drug therapy, surgery, neurostimulation, and ketogenic diets. The wide range of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) remains the cornerstone of treatment. Even with the plethora of epilepsy therapies now available, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that at least 45% of people with epilepsy continue to experience seizures because there’s a serious gap that exists between established recommendations and the actual care patients receive.

This one-day symposium will bring participants up to date on new advancements in the field of epilepsy and increase their awareness of new therapies available for their patients.

Case studies will be presented with opportunities for questions at the end of each topic.

Target Audience: Attendings, Physicians, Radiologists, Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Neurophysiology Techs, Fellows, Medical Students, Nurses, PAs

The program will offer 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Objectives
  1. Review new anti-epileptic medications
  2. Discuss updates of rescue seizure therapies
  3. Apply the most recent imaging techniques in patients with epilepsy
  4. Describe the ketogenic diet and its usefulness in treating both pediatric and adult patients with medically refractory epilepsy
  5. Clarify the laws and regulations in Connecticut and surrounding states for driving with a diagnosis of epilepsy
  6. Develop plans for rescue therapy in treatment of seizure clusters and prolonged seizures. Understand translating these plans in to written seizure action plans.
  7. Discuss the role of the neurologist in the treatment of psychogenic non-epileptic attacks (PNEA)
  8. Examine the role of using multimodality monitoring in patients suffering from status epilepticus
  9. Identify the potential roles of involving advanced practice providers (PAs, APRNs) in an epilepsy practice.
  10. Explain the current treatment paradigms for patients suffering from post acute symptomatic seizures
  11. Explain the role of the neuropsychologist in the evaluation of an epilepsy patient and updates to the care they can offer
  12. Identify patients who might be good candidates for a clinical trial for epilepsy
  13. Discuss surgical treatment options for patients with epilepsy, including neurostimulation
  14. Develop an approach for diagnosing and treating patients with likely autoimmune epilepsy disorders
  15. Discuss options for seizure safety, including the use of wearable devices and alarms.
