Overview

Provisions of the Connecticut General Statutes require that physicians applying for license renewal in the State of Connecticut must acquire 50 contact hours of continuing medical education within the preceding 24-month period including at least one contact hour of training or education of accredited CME in each of the following topics: (A) Infectious diseases, including, but not limited to, acquired immune deficiency syndrome and human immunodeficiency virus, (B) risk management, including, but not limited to, for registration periods beginning on or after October 1, 2015, prescribing controlled substances and pain management, (C) sexual assault, (D) domestic violence, (E) cultural competency, and (F) behavioral health, provided further that on and after January 1, 2016, such behavioral health continuing medical education may include, but not be limited to, at least two contact hours of training or education during the first renewal period in which continuing education is required and not less than once every six years thereafter, on the topic of mental health conditions common to veterans and family members of veterans, including (i) determining whether a patient is a veteran or family member of a veteran, (ii) screening for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, risk of suicide, depression and grief, and (iii) suicide prevention training.

As a CME provider for physicians in the state of Connecticut it is important for Yale CME to provide opportunities that meet the state-required topics. Therefore, Yale CME offers mandated courses online that will not only meet the state mandated course requirements to be relicensed, but will also provide valuable information for physicians and other health care providers in the state.

Objectives
  1. Implement revised CDC HIV screening recommendations into their practice
  2. Implement PrEP recommendations into practice
  3. Incorporate the new CDC recommendations for HCV screening
  4. Identify behaviors that place patients at risk for acquiring HIV and HCV
  5. Describe the natural history of HIV/HCV co-infection
  6. Recognize the intersection of domestic violence/sexual assault and HIV/AIDS
  7. Assess the role of domestic violence and sexual assault in the clinical management of HIV/AIDS patients
  8. Demonstrate an appreciation of the cultural issues related to providing medical care to transgendered individuals
  9. Discuss the key elements of the evaluation, diagnostic, and medical/medication management processes for mental health issues (Depression, Anxiety)
  10. Contrast the risks and benefits of opioid medication use
  11. Outline steps to improve the safety of opioid medication use in the community setting
  12. Discuss and describe mental health concerns for veterans
