Overview

Vascular disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality and affects more than a third of the adult population. COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted patients with vascular disease. Infected patients with COVID-19 are prone to thrombosis and clotting of the arteries and the veins. Patients not infected experience significant delays in needed surgeries at the time of surge because of limited hospital capacity. The vascular surgeon must have advanced knowledge and experience with the management of vascular problems, including all elements of clinical evaluation, medical management, and indications and techniques relating to open and endovascular treatment of vascular disorders. Other health care providers caring for those patients and sometimes evaluating them before a vascular surgeon do play a major role in the management of this challenging patient population.

Educating other health care providers about the modern treatment of vascular diseases is paramount to inform the community about the contemporary options for therapy. The impact of the current pandemic on vascular care will be emphasized.

Target Audience: Medical internists, family physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, nurses, technologists, students, and health care providers interested in vascular disease.

Objectives
  1. Discuss advances in medical therapies utilized in the treatment of vascular disease
  2. Describe new directions in the treatment of aneurysmal disease
  3. Review surgical treatments for peripheral arterial disease
  4. Summarize mechanisms of thrombosis and cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 and CT’s response to the pandemic
  5. Discuss anatomic variations and pathologic findings, patient selection, and the use of new endovascular devices in patients with cervical and upper extremity conditions
  6. Identify patients with chronic venous insufficiency who benefit from evaluation by a vascular specialist
