Yale is collaborating with ACGME to co-sponsor a regional faculty development course for academic faculty. This 4-part course is a condensed version of the popular week-long ACGME course concentrated on assessment skills. This highly interactive course will cover learner assessment skills (such as direct observation and feedback) as well as tools and strategies to help programs best meet their programmatic requirements (clinical competency committee input, multisource evaluations). The target audience includes program directors, associate program directors, fellowship directors, chairs, heads of clinical competency committees and other core faculty with major responsibility for assessment of residents and fellows.

The first two sessions (Sept 11 and 18) are conducted virtually and the last two (September 25 and 26) are in person at the Yale School of Medicine campus. Attendees are expected to attend the entire course.

Target Audience
Faculty involved in education of health care professional trainees.

Highlights of this highly experiential, hands-on course will include:

  • Goals and principles of CBME (from milestones to EPAs)
  • Practical application of multiple assessment methods and tools
  • How to creative effective assessment systems
  • Providing effective Feedback
  • Direct Observation: Feedback on your Feedback!
  • Self–regulated learning- what is its role in resident and student education?
  • Clinical Competency Committee Management

Objectives
  1. Apply key principles of outcomes-based education in graduate medical education training programs
  2. Develop effective group process for assessment (Progress committees, Clinical Competency Committees);
  3. Explore approaches to use of multi-faceted longitudinal assessment data for professional development
  4. Optimize the use of developmental assessment based on goals and principles of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME)
  5. Describe and apply key issues in rater cognition and their implications for effective assessment
  6. Build an effective assessment program by choosing and applying appropriate assessment tools
  7. Employ effective practices in work-based assessment
  8. Develop a personal action plan for change in their own residency or fellowship program

Please note: We are only accepting 30 participants for this educational program. Registration is completed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
